“The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls, is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts, and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word” (XIV. 1).
We already witnessed their denial of the gospel in X.3, but I’ll make a few comments in light this aforementioned denial and what they say here above and the verses they cite in support of it.
The WCF cites 2 Corinthians 4:13: “We having the same spirit of faith.” Really? Not for the WCF obviously. They make exceptions for this. Remember, it is only “ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word,” though they have no Biblical basis for saying this.
Romans 10:14: “…how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” How indeed? The unwarranted assumption of the WCF is that John the Baptist—and by extension any other elect infant—does not have a believing mother or father who will read and preach to him from the Word of God while in the womb and/or that they won’t be able to understand what is being read/preached.
Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Not in all cases saith the WCF. The truth of the Word of God must die a qualifying death since these theologians chose NOT to cast down, but rather to lift up “every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Some may say that the WCF men should receive a “free pass” since their rejection of Scripture was simply due to their getting acclimated to the highly elevated theological, philosophical, and scientific claims of that day.
Well, it’s been about 358 years since the WCF was completed and apparently the adherents to this Confession are still getting acclimated after all these years.
