Robert Haldane, commenting on Romans 10:4, said:
“To prove that Christ was the perfection or the end of the law, is the great object of the Epistle to the Hebrews, which furnishes a complete commentary on the passage before us.”
In other words, the book of Hebrews explains Romans 10:4 in greater detail. Now even though Haldane exposed himself as the mutinous critic of God’s sovereign justice in such passages as Romans 9:18-20, he does say some helpful and correct things elsewhere in his commentary. Another commentator, whose name escapes me, said that the entire book of Hebrews was a commentary on what the book of Leviticus was all about.
Hebrews 1:3, speaking of Jesus Christ, says:
“…having made purification of our sins through Himself, He sat down on the right of the Majesty on high.”
The Calvinist and Arminian heretics who believe that the sins of everyone without exception were imputed to Christ do NOT believe that purification of sins is solely through the work of Christ, but rather through their own self-righteous efforts. Other Calvinists (sometimes referred to as “High Calvinists” or “Owenists”) who say that Christ bore only the sins of the elect, nevertheless ADD “graciously enabled,” “non-meritorious” conditions to His purifying work before it can be applied to them. Thus, they are NOT being freely justified by His grace (Romans 3:24), but are being “graciously enabled” to put God in their debt (Romans 4:4, 11:6). And the hypercalvinist heretics have a hypothetical purification which makes a mockery of Christ’s real purification.
Roman Catholics have some things in common with Arminians (e.g., Christ dying for everyone without exception). Of course, their doctrine of purgatory also makes a blasphemous mockery of the true purification of Jesus Christ.
And lastly, the fact that Christ SAT DOWN is significant, obviously. We know that this is something the Levitical priests could never do (cf. Hebrews 7:11-28). In John 17:4 Christ said that He finished the work His Father gave Him to do and on the cross He exclaimed, “It is finished.” All of the aforementioned damnable false religious views contradict such Biblical facts as Christ sitting down, Christ actually making a true and real purification, and Christ actually finishing this purifying work that His Father gave Him to do.
