“Men are provoked to lust either by hearing or reading of dishonest ditties and bawdy ballads; or by looking on and beholding wanton dances, unseemly sights, ribald talk, and filthy examples. They therefore are by this law are reproved, which wink at or cherish, which are the bawds or bringers together of adulterous persons. Unto the wicked the Lord in the Psalms doth say: ‘Why dost thou take my covenant in thy mouth, whereas thou hatest to be reformed, and dost cast my words behind thee? When thou sawest a thief, thou consentedst unto him; and hast been partaker with the adulterers’”(Heinrich Bullinger, Decades, 2nd Decade, Sermon 10 , vol 2, p. 419 ).
Bullinger’s description fits most of the Reformed establishment like a glove. For many of them behold “unseemly sights, ribald talk, and filthy examples” on the television/movie screen and find them quite exhilarating. They may claim to hate such things as adultery, lewdness, or ribald joking, but when they willingly set such wickedness before their eyes, they imply that they wink at or cherish it (cf. Romans 1:32). If you truly hate and do not approve of things like adultery then do not play the strumpet-endorsing bawd by bringing the brothel into your home via movies or television.
Do not consent (via the television screen) with the thief or the violence-monger who strikes with the fists of wickedness. Do not become partakers with the wicked by making light of the sin the performers on the screen are making light of.
“I will set no wicked thing before my eyes; I have hated the work of those who turn aside; it shall not fasten upon me” (Psalm 101:3).
“For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, proving what is pleasing to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them” (Ephesians 5:9-11).
” … who Himself carried up in His body our sins onto the tree; that dying to sins, we might live to righteousness, of whom by His wound you were healed. For you were as sheep going astray, but now you turned back to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” (1 Peter 2:24-25).
“And call on Me in the day of distress, and I will save you; and you shall glorify Me. But to the wicked, God says, What is it to you to proclaim My statutes, and to take up My covenant on your mouth? Yea, you hate instruction and toss My Words behind you. When you saw a thief, you were pleased with him; and with adulterers is your portion. You give your mouth to evil, and your tongue frames deceit. You sit; you speak against your brother; you give fault to the son of your mother. You have done these things, and I have kept silence; you thought that surely I would be like you; but I will rebuke you and set in order before your eyes. Now think of this, you who forget God, lest I tear, and there not be any to deliver: Whoever offers thanks glorifies Me; and he who prepares a way, I will show the salvation of God to him” (Psalm 50:15-23).
