Capernaum Calvinist responds according to custom to Christ the King (cf. Matthew 11:23-30).
“And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.”
“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. [Greek: epignosis: FULL KNOWLEDGE] For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth” (Romans 10:1-4).
Capernaum Calvinist: I am reminded by this kind of rhetoric that even God’s truth can be professed without love and without balance. I feel for anyone who thinks themselves to have such a perfect understanding of all things (i.e., the righteousness of God and Christ as the end of the law) that they can make the comparison made above (also note how Paul is ADDING *perfection of understanding* of God’s righteousness to the simple gospel as THE *standard* of salvation itself). Most of the folks I know in Reformed Capernaum churches once stood and sang hymns without a FULL KNOWLEDGE of Christ as the end of the law for righteousness: to compare them to zealous ignoramuses and sodomites is simply sad. God protect us all from imbalance.
“At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and [he] to whomsoever the Son will reveal [him.] Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:23-30).
Capernaum Calvinist: Apparently, a perfect and full-orbed understanding of the Father in relation to the Son and the Holy Spirit. Why cannot revelation unto babes begin with LIES and then after a difficult, breaking process … eventually grow into the TRUTH? I suspect the uncharitable ones will tell me it is because no lie is of the truth and that there is such a thing as acknowledging an (optional) truth while remaining in damnable falsehood. But of course, Paul’s clear words in Romans 10:1-4 puts the lie to this cavil and canard of mine.
